Musical Director – Ian Crawford

IIan1n September 2015, Marple Choral Society welcomed Ian Crawford as the new Musical Director.
Ian was educated at Christ Church, Oxford where he directed the College Choir and after graduating he lived and worked in London, studying conducting with Laurence Leonard (GSMAD), piano with Raymond Fischer (RAM) and voice with Roderick Earle (RCM).
Whilst in London, Ian was Musical Director of the All Saints Chamber Orchestra and they performed works by composers ranging from Bach to Britten including a series of piano concertos with the pianist Robert Bridge.

After working as a guest conductor with London-based choirs and a cappella groups, Ian joined Southport Bach Choir (SBC) as Director of Music in 2012. He will conduct Crosby Symphony Orchestra and Chorus again in May 2016 when they will perform Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.

Since moving to the North West in 2010, Ian has been increasingly active as a composer and arranger, writing choral commissions in four parts and original scores for youth theatre productions. An enthusiastic advocate of the Cambiata approach which encourages boys to keep singing as their voices change, Ian has written numerous arrangements for boys’ singing groups including Cambiata North West (Association of British Choral Directors).

As a performing musician Ian sings with several chamber choirs and as a deputy lay clerk at Liverpool Metropolitan and Anglican cathedrals. Concert performances range from Bach’s St Matthew Passion (Tilford Bach Society/ Laurence Cummings) to backing Snow Patrol on Later…with Jools Holland.

Ian is currently Director of Music at The King’s School in Macclesfield.
